Lincoln Students Volunteer to Help Kidney Foundation

On August 16, 2012, Lincoln College’s medical students and their instructors participated in an extremely rewarding volunteer project at the Life Enrichment Center of Dayton. Working in collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation, the students had the opportunity to participate in raising awareness and providing local participants with free screenings for kidney disease. The students registered patients and obtained informed consent from the patients upon arrival. Next, the students collected detailed personal and family health histories, performed blood pressure screenings, measured the height and weight of each patient, screened urine and blood specimens, and prepared the patients for a consultation with the on-site physicians.

The students and instructors from Lincoln College volunteered over 250 man hours and touched the lives of over 100 patients at this event. The representative of the National Kidney Foundation was very impressed with what she described as “top-notch” service that was offered to the patients. The students made such an outstanding impression, the foundation expressed a desire to build a relationship with our medical department so it may continue to contribute volunteers in the future. All of the students that participated in this event and represented our school in a professional manner deserve congratulations on a job well-done.

Featured Faculty: Dominic Thacker-Mann

Dominic Thacker-Mann is one of our medical instructors here at Lincoln College of Technology. Dominic is a caring and knowledgeable instructor who has received an instructor of the year award during his service here at LCT. Take some time a read a little more about Dominic.

Lincoln Eagle (LE): What were you doing before joining Lincoln College of Technology (LCT)?

Dominic Thacker-Mann (DT): I was a medical resident.

LE: Where did you go to college?

DT: I received my Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan and my Doctor of Medicine at Case School of Medicine.

LE: What other career fields were you interested in?

DT: Exercise physiology is interesting to me. I would like to work as a personal trainer to help guide and motivate people to live healthier lives.

LE: What is your favorite thing about LCT?

DT: The small class sizes allow me to develop a close rapport with my students.

LE: What is your favorite thing about Dayton?

DT: It reminds me of my hometown because my neighborhood is close knit. The sense of community is very important to me.

LE: How did you become interested in your field?

DT: I didn’t understand biology very well in high school, but it was intriguing to me. I was determined to improve my understanding in college and that lead to an interest in medicine. I was given my first opportunity to teach in a preparatory course for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and I immediately knew that I wanted teach biology one day.

LE: What advice do you have for LCT students?

DT: You may not be able to change your circumstances immediately, but you can change how you respond to the circumstances. If you feel like you are always under stress, you probably aren’t responding in a healthy way. Surround yourself with friends and family that are supportive and, of course, eat right and exercise.

LE: Tell us some things about yourself:

DT: I am from Mount Clemens, MI. I have been married for six years and have a five year old daughter. Rocky I is my favorite movie. I was also on the wrestling team as a freshman in high school and never won a match.

Farewell to Marquetta Lamb: The Lincoln Eagle remembers a wonderful student and friend

It is with great sadness that Lincoln College of Technology bids farewell to a beloved student and friend, Marquetta Lamb. Ms. Lamb passed away unexpectedly on July 8th, leaving two daughters, and many other family members and friends. We will all remember Marquetta’s kindness, enthusiasm, friendliness and positive attitude. Here, some of our instructors share their favorite memories of Marquetta. She will be greatly missed.

From Ms. Angela Wade:

I have never heard Marquetta complain she was always smiling, and joking, and was definitely the life of the party. During a conversation with Ms. Lamb about a month prior she expressed her excitement about being so close to completing her education here at Lincoln College and starting a new career. The events of her death were very untimely and heartbreaking. She will be greatly missed.

From Dr. Ginger York:

Marquetta Lamb was a remarkable person. She had a beautiful smile that would light up the entire classroom. She always took the time to comfort those around her who needed comforting. She was very caring and often volunteered to lend a hand when someone needed help. She had a generous spirit, a gentle soul and a graceful presence. I feel priviledged to have known her. She is most definitely missed.

From Ms. Jennifer B urns:

Marquetta's smile and beautiful energy will be missed. She has many friends, instructors, and classmates praying for her and her family. She made our mornings brighter and put a smile on our faces every day she was with us at Lincoln College. When I think of Marquetta, I think about her smile, bright eyes, love for style, and the positive messages she shared with students and friends when they were feeling overwhelmed with their classes or life issues. She was excited to help other students understand classroom topics, and was the type of student every teacher hopes to have in class. I am sad to see her empty chair, but take comfort in knowing she is in Gods hands. What an amazing place to be.
With love and sympathy.

From Ms. Deanna Shores:

Marquetta was witty and energetic. She was dedicated to working hard for her family. Her laughing smile will be missed.

Featured Faculty: Ms. Watkins

Many of our students already know Ms. Watkins as one of our developmental instructors and the night-time assistant in the library. Get to know a little bit more!

Lincoln Eagle (LE): Where are you from?

Therese Watkins (TW): I grew up around Dayton, and graduated from High School in Xenia.

LE: Where did you go to college?

TW: I have an Associate’s degree in Computer Administration from RETS, a Bachelor’s degree in English from Wright State and a Master’s of Education from Wright State. I’m currently enrolled at Wright State’s Master of Information Systems program.

LE: What do you like best about teaching?

TW: I like the feeling that I’m helping students, and hopefully, helping to make their lives better.

LE: What is your favorite book?

TW: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

LE: If you were to do something other than teach, what would you want to do?

TW: It would probably be something computer-related. That’s what I did before, and it is what I’m studying now.

LE: Do you have any hobbies?

TW: I’m a geek. I like attending renaissance festivals—I get dressed up in renaissance costumes.

LE: What kind of costumes?

TW: I have a long medieval dress and a sort of pirate, swashbuckler costume. I like the pirate one better because I get to wear a sword.

LE: A real sword?

TW: Yes, a real sword. I also have a collection of swords.

LE: What is your favorite thing about Dayton?

TW: It’s a cheap place to live!
