Professionalism: How to Interview for success

You finally have the job interview that you’ve been after. These tips will help you succeed!

Be Polite and Respectful:
It is not only important for you to be polite to the person who interviews you, but also to the other people that you meet during your visit. Say “please” and “thank you” when anyone assists you. Also, do not forget to thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you!

Allow an appropriate amount of time for your interview:
Give yourself time to arrive a few minutes early to your interview, but not more than five or ten minutes. Make sure you have enough time to stay as long as is needed by the prospective employer.

Dress for the job that you want:
Take note of the way that people dress in the profession to which you are applying. Try to dress similarly for your interview. If you aren’t sure how to dress, remember that it is better to be overdressed rather than underdressed. Here are just a few suggestions of articles of clothing to be avoided for your interview:
  • tennis shoes
  • jeans
  • facial piercings
  • visible bras / underwear
  • heavy or flashy makeup
  • smelling of cigarettes
  • un-tucked shirts
  • poor posture/slouching
  • sandals / platform shoes

Avoid sloppy speech:
Use proper grammar when you are interacting with the prospective employer. This can mean several things:

  • Don’t use phrases such as “um” or “uhh” when you are thinking. Instead, pause and take a breath before continuing.
  • Slow down! Many people start speaking more quickly when they are nervous.
  • Don’t use slang.
  • Be confident when describing your achievements and goals.

Thanksgiving in Dayton: Celebrating the Holiday as a Community

Still not sure how to spend your Thanksgiving Holiday this year? One of the largest events in town will be this year’s Thanksgiving in Dayton: A Feast of giving. Formerly known as the Beerman Thanksgiving Day Dinner, this event will be sponsored by Dayton’s News Source, Dermatologists of Southwest Ohio and Art Smith LLC.

The goal of the dinner is to provide a holiday dinner to the less fortunate, people who are alone during the holidays and anyone else who wants to attend. Everyone is welcome! If you’d like to attend, the dinner will be held on Thanksgiving day at the Dayton Convention Center.

Events like this rely heavily on the time that volunteers are able to devote to helping others. If you are interested in volunteering or receiving more information, visit the following website:
